Ageing Well Creative Lab

Redefining ageing through creativity and technology

The Ageing Well Creative Lab is a fortnightly program that brings older adults together to explore cutting-edge creative technologies in a supportive, collaborative environment. Based in UniSC's state-of-the-art MIT Fab Lab and led by creative ageing researcher Dr Tricia King. Our program challenges traditional perceptions of ageing while fostering innovation, connection, and wellbeing.

Go behind the scenes of our latest community fundraiser!

The Ageing Well Creative Lab held a portrait fundraising event for Dementia Australia recently, drawing support from across the university community including undergraduate and postgraduate students, academics, and professional staff. The fundraiser was devised and led by older adults from the AWCL, with over 80 people attending to have their photograph portrait created and nearly $2000 raised for DA.  The fundraising event is a practical application of UniSC's commitment as an Age-Friendly University Global Network (AFU) member, which recognises the important role UniSC plays in providing older adults in our regions with lifelong learning opportunities.

What We Do

Our attendees aren't just observers—they're co-creators. Through hands-on workshops and immersive experiences, older adults engage with: photography and visual storytelling, new technologies like augmented reality and 3D printing, drone photography, traditional creative practice, and more!

Beyond the Lab

Our program extends far beyond traditional workshop spaces. We organize immersive field trips across the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, from whale-listening expeditions on the ocean to photography walks through rainforest environments. These experiences connect participants with place while developing new skills and perspectives.

Our Approach

The Ageing Well Creative Lab operates on the principle that older adults are experts in their own experiences. We create spaces where creative practice becomes a bridge for social connection, personal expression, and improved wellbeing. Our approach recognises that creativity has no expiration date and that technological fluency can be developed at any age.

Community Impact

As part of UniSC's commitment as an Age-Friendly University, the Creative Lab demonstrates how higher education institutions can meaningfully engage with older community members. Our participants often become mentors and leaders within the program, sharing their expertise while gaining new skills. The lab regularly hosts community events and fundraising initiatives, strengthening connections between the university and the broader Sunshine Coast community.

Research and Innovation

The Creative Lab serves as a living laboratory for research into creative ageing, technological engagement, and community wellbeing. Our work contributes to national and international understanding of how creative practices can support healthy ageing while challenging ageist assumptions about technology adoption and creative capacity.

Supporters

The Ageing Well Creative Lab exists through the support of the Creative Ecologies Research Cluster at University of the Sunshine Coast and our ongoing partnership with Comlink Australia.
